Surface Tensions

The myth of Narcissus tells the tale of a young man who became infatuated with his own reflection in a pool of water and was unable to tear himself away. As he gazed into the surface, he essentially created a double of himself—a dual self. Hannah uses the imagery of a pool/ellipse and surface/boundary to explore the duality of selves or identities within us: the self perceived and seen by others, and the self that emanates from within.

In her work, Hannah experiments with layering marks and explores various methods of extending a drawing beyond the conventional frame of the paper. For this exhibition, viewers will have the opportunity to navigate within and between two images/layers, observing each self individually while also witnessing how they intersect and interact as a whole from the street.
